Booking your first surf lesson is exciting — but it's normal to wonder exactly what the day will look like. Here's a clear walkthrough of what to expect from start to finish when you book with Venture North Shore.

Before You Arrive

Wear comfortable swimwear, apply reef-safe sunscreen ahead of time, and bring a towel and a change of clothes. Eat a light meal an hour or so before your lesson so you have energy without feeling weighed down.

Meeting Your Instructor

Your lesson starts on the beach, not in the water. Your instructor will introduce themselves, get a sense of your comfort level in the ocean, and walk you through the plan for the day based on current conditions.

On-Land Training

Before you ever touch the water, you'll practice on the sand:

  • How to carry and position your board

  • Paddling technique

  • The pop-up — going from lying down to standing

  • Basic ocean safety

  • Surf etiquette

Practicing the pop-up on the sand builds muscle memory, so it feels more natural once you're on a moving wave.

Getting in the Water

Once you're comfortable on land, you'll paddle out with your instructor to a beginner-friendly spot. Your instructor will position your board, choose the right waves for your skill level, and coach you through each attempt.

Most first-time students catch at least one wave during their very first lesson — and standing up on your first try is a real possibility.

Coach Dom's Corner: Even if you don't stand up on your first wave, simply riding it while lying on the board is an unforgettable feeling. Don't put pressure on yourself to be perfect — the goal of lesson one is just to have fun and get comfortable in the ocean.

After Your Lesson

Most lessons run about 1.5 to 2 hours including time on the beach and in the water. You'll leave with a real sense of what surfing feels like, and a foundation to build on for your next session.

What to Bring

  • Swimwear you're comfortable moving in

  • Reef-safe sunscreen

  • A towel and change of clothes

  • Water bottle
