Wetsuit or Rash Guard? What Beginners Should Wear

What you wear affects your comfort in the water more than people expect — here's how to think about it as a beginner.

Rash Guards: The Hawaii Default

In warm water destinations like Oahu, a rash guard over swimwear is usually all you need. It protects against sunburn and board rash without adding bulk or overheating you.

When a Wetsuit Makes Sense

In cooler water or cooler seasons, a wetsuit adds warmth and a bit of extra buoyancy. It's more common in places like California or during Hawaii's cooler months and early mornings.

Fit Matters More Than Style

A wetsuit that's too loose lets in water and drags; too tight restricts paddling. If you're renting or borrowing one, prioritize a snug, comfortable fit over how it looks.

What We Provide

Most lessons include a rash guard as part of the package, so you don't need to buy anything before trying surfing for the first time — just show up in comfortable swimwear.

Not sure what you'll need for the day's conditions? Book a lesson and we'll make sure you're set up right.
