If you're searching for surf lessons on the North Shore of Oahu, you're looking in the right place. This stretch of coastline is world-famous for big winter waves, but it's also home to calm, forgiving breaks that make it a genuinely great place for beginners to learn — as long as you know where to go and who to learn from.

At Venture North Shore, we've taught visitors of every age and background how to catch their first wave right here on Oahu's legendary coast.

Why Learn to Surf on the North Shore?

The North Shore has a reputation for massive winter swells, and that reputation is well earned. But outside of the big winter surf season, and at the right beginner-friendly spots, the North Shore offers warm water, welcoming instructors, and some of the most beautiful scenery in Hawaii to learn in.

Learning here also means learning surf history — this is the birthplace of big-wave surfing and home to some of the sport's most iconic beaches.

Who Are Our Lessons For?

  • First-time surfers of any age

  • Families traveling together

  • Couples on honeymoon or anniversary trips

  • Kids catching their first wave

  • Groups of friends looking for a shared adventure

  • Returning visitors ready to keep progressing

You don't need experience and you don't need to be in great shape. You just need a willingness to try.

Types of Surf Lessons We Offer

  • Private Surf Lessons — one-on-one instruction paced to your comfort level

  • Family Surf Lessons — parents and kids learning together

  • Group Surf Lessons — a fun, social option for friends or larger travel groups

  • Kids Surf Lessons — patient, age-appropriate coaching for younger surfers

What to Expect During Your Lesson

Every lesson starts on the beach, not in the water. Your instructor will walk you through ocean safety, how to carry and position your board, paddling technique, the pop-up, and basic surf etiquette.

Once you're comfortable on land, you'll head into the water, where your instructor helps position your board, picks the right waves for your skill level, and coaches you through every attempt. Most first-time students catch at least one wave in their very first session.

Coach Dom's Corner: After teaching thousands of lessons out here, the biggest thing I tell new students is that the North Shore is more welcoming than its reputation suggests. Visitors often arrive picturing giant winter waves, and are surprised at how calm and beginner-friendly the right spots can be. Trust your instructor, relax your shoulders, and let the wave do the work.

Best Time of Year for Beginner Lessons

The North Shore is famous for huge winter swells, which is fantastic for watching professional surfing but not the time to learn. Beginner lessons are best scheduled outside of major winter swell events, when conditions are calmer and more forgiving. Your instructor will always choose the safest, most appropriate spot and day based on current conditions.
