You don't need to be an athlete to learn to surf, but a little prep can help you get more out of your first lesson.
Shoulder and Back Endurance
Paddling relies heavily on shoulders and upper back. Simple bodyweight exercises like push-ups or resistance band rows a few times a week can help build the endurance you'll need.
Balance Practice
Balance drills — like standing on one leg, or practicing on a balance board or even a couch cushion at home — help train the stabilizing muscles surfing relies on.
Practice the Pop-Up on Land
Lie on the floor as if you were on a surfboard and practice the motion of pushing up into a standing surf stance. Muscle memory built on land transfers directly to the water.
Basic Cardio
Surfing is more aerobic than people expect. Any regular cardio — walking, swimming, cycling — helps build the stamina for a full lesson.
Don't Overthink It
None of this is required. Plenty of first-timers show up with zero prep and still have a great first lesson. Consider this a bonus, not a prerequisite.
Whatever shape you're in, we'll meet you there. Book your first lesson and let your instructor handle the rest.
